Even as the overall growth in employment across the secondary and tertiary sectors has been witnessing a steep decline in the last few months, IT and ITeS sectors, however, continue to lead the show with a projected growth of 16.3 per cent and 23.6 per cent respectively for the quarter beginning July, 2005.

As per the quarterly Ma Foi Employment Survey (MEtS) report announced here today, organised industry in both the sectors continues to be upbeat for the current quarter with an increase of 1.39 per cent as compared to 1.28 per cent in the last quarter.

However, the growth figures during the two quarters prior to these quarters were 3.21 per cent and 3.35 per cent respectively.

MEI (Ma Foi Employment Index) for the product segment was 0.95 per cent and services segment was at 2.1 per cent. Growth in employment was higher in SME (small and medium enterprises extending from Rs 1 crore to Rs 100 crore) with 2.89 per cent when compared to below 2 per cent growth in hiring in bigger companies.

Releasing the survey results, K Pandia Rajan, managing director of Ma Foi, observed that employment growth appeared to be cooling down. However, he added though there is a decline in the overall growth rate of employment, it is expected to stabilise at a higher level as compared to below 1 per cent rate in the jobless growth period of the first ten years of reforms in the country.

Growth in public sector is quite low at 0.01 per cent which is in sharp contrast to private sector companies which are expected to register 2.6 per cent growth. Employment index in public limited companies is at 1.21 per cent, the survey projected.

As per the results, Karnataka leads the hiring trends in the country with Bangalore topping the recruiting scene. The top five states for the quarter are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh. The top five cities are Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.

In terms of job creation, south has emerged as the hotbed with a growth of 5.15 per cent for the current quarter. The eastern part of the country remained near stagnant with just 0.2 per cent growth while the north and west registered a projected growth of 0.71 per cent and 1.59 per cent respectively.

Among the top five states, Andhra Pradesh came fourth with 1.29 per cent as compared to 2.89 per cent growth for Karnataka and an expected 1.91 per cent growth for Tamil Nadu. IT and ITeS are back in spotlight as the top hirers displacing telecom to the third place.

Print media & entertainment, pharma, transport & logistics, healthcare, textile and garments and hospitality industry followed closely, the report revealed.

MEtS, which is termed as the country's first employment survey, was launched in November 2004. The survey encompasses 17 industry segments covering 2,092 employers of which 95 were from public sector and 1997 companies belonged to the private sector.
